Difference between DIP and SMD LED displays

A dual inline package is an integrated circuit packaging method in which a rectangular housing contains two sets of electrical contact strips. The package can be embedded in a printed circuit board (PCB) or connected using a socketing technique.

Surface-mount technology (SMT) is generally defined as the technology used in creating circuits where components are attached or placed directly on the printed circuit boards. An electronic device designed in this manner is called a surface-mount device (SMD).

Here are some pictures of DIP and SMD LEDs to which you may refer when necessary

The dip LED screen is one of the older models compared to the new technology known as SMD. However, it is also one of the most solid and long-term options for outdoor LED displays. Sunny-mounted SMD screen display is a relatively new technology, and it can be seen in the newer technologies now because it has superior quality and higher definition. The differences, advantages, and disadvantages of them have been outlined below for your consideration.

The benefits of DIP are that it is easier to solder components to the board, and the use of all-through holes also means that they are less likely to crack off when using specialty manufacturing tools, such as scissors or pliers. The drawbacks of SMD are that it is harder to solder the parts directly to the board, and getting smaller through holes is also challenging. The manufacturing process for DIP and SMD also has advantages and disadvantages.

For DIP, each pixel comprises three independent color light emitting diodes LED bulbs (RGB). They are individually marked by two long feet at one end. Because the length of these pins is longer than the thickness of the PCB pad, once through-hole soldering, the condition of cold soldering rarely occurs. The SMD LED display has short legs, and the LED lamp was mounted on the PCB pad. Hence, it may easily cause cold soldering issues compared to the DIP.

This kind of foot is suitable for LED bulbs since they provide good heat dissipation performance. Good electrolyte/heap contact implies that LED displays have long lives due to their ability to dissipate heat. So, in the long run, DIP LEDs will be more enduring than SMD.

DIP LED screen forms use less power than the same SMD specifications. Generally, the power dissipation of DIP LED displays is ~0.33 times less than that of SMD displays.

Advantages of SMD and disadvantages of DIP

Since a DIP LED bulb is extensive and each pixel is constituted of three bulbs, a DIP LED display can not meet the requirement after a pixel pitch of less than 10mm. Currently, only p10mm,p12mm,p16mup, and p20mm are here for DIP LED displays. However, SMD LEDs are compact so that they can be assembled more compactly and hence take less space. As the positioning within the close network becomes tighter and nearer, the resolution also gets higher. In the case of SMD-led displays, the pixel pitch can be manufactured from a range of 0.

It also reveals that DIP LED displays have shorter viewing angles compared to SMD LED displays. It only displays H120° and V.60°, whereas the SMD LED indicates that the viewing angle is flexible, with the possibility of reaching up to H160°vV160°. Consequently, if one has to enjoy a high level of sharpness of viewing angles, it is possible to go with SMD LED screens.

DIP uses three bulbs for each pixel; producing 1 pixel on PCB DIP will be at least three times slower than SMD, and the overall production cost is higher for DIP. Numerous new advanced SMT machines can precede SMD mounting processes much faster than DIP. This is one of the reasons why we can observe now that the number of manufacturers who offer DIP LED displays has significantly decreased.

As a rule, a DIP-led display is much more expensive than SMD if measured by the same characteristics and pitch.

In general, they are both excellent but accompanied by some disadvantages. You can consider DIP LED displays for other outdoor fixed installation projects with high brightness and more durable use. SMD ones can considerfor those who need the highest definition and viewing angles. Indoors could involve relatively shorter viewing distances, and here, we try to achieve the best picture quality. High brightness is not need, so any outdoor SMD screen is prefer.
