The Revolutionary War began in April 1775. Few colonists wanted to complete Independence Day USA. Those who did, however, were considered radicals.

The next year, more colonists were in favor of independence due to the growing hostility towards Britain and the spreading of revolutionary sentiments, such as those expressed by Thomas Paine’s bestselling pamphlet, ” Common Sense” in early 1776.

Richard Henry Lee, a delegate from Virginia to the Continental Congress who met in the Pennsylvania State House at Independence Hall (later Independence Hall), Philadelphia on June 7, introduced a resolution calling for independence of the colonies.

Congress, after heated debates, postponed voting on Lee’s Resolution. However, it appointed a five-man committee, including Thomas Jefferson from Virginia, John Adams from Massachusetts, Roger Sherman from Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin from Pennsylvania, and Robert R. Livingston, New York, to draft a formal declaration justifying the break-up with Great Britain.

John Adams wrote his wife Abigail on that day that July 2, “will celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival” and that this celebration would include “Pomp, Parade…Games and Sports…Guns, Bells, and Illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other.”

The Continental Congress adopt the Declaration of Independence on July 4, which was largely written by Jefferson. The actual vote for independence was held on July 2, but the 4th of July became the date that Americans celebrate the birth of their independence.

In the years before the Revolution, colonists celebrated the birthday of the King with a variety of activities, including the ringing and lighting of bells, processions, speeches, and bonfires. Fourth Of July Fireworks

The first fireworks have used since 200 BC. In Philadelphia, the tradition of lighting fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July started on July 4, 1777. This was during the first organized Independence Day celebration. A 13-gun salute was fired by a ship’s cannon in honor of the 13 colonies. The Pennsylvania Evening Post reported: “at night, there was a great display of fireworks on the Commons (which started and ended with thirteen rockets), and the city looked beautifully illuminated.” On the same night, the Sons of Liberty lit up fireworks over Boston Common.

After the War of 1812 in which America again faced Great Britain, the tradition of celebrating patriotically became more widespread. In 1870, Congress declared July 4th as a federal holiday. Independence Day has become less important in terms of political significance, but it remains a national holiday that is a sign of patriotism and an important symbol.

Since the late 19th Century, the Fourth of June has a popular family event, with fireworks and barbecues. The American flag is the most popular symbol for the holiday. The national anthem, ” The Star-Spangled Banner”, is also a favorite.
